HNB secures $101 Million Dollar Judgment Against Makers of Unauthorized Set-Top Boxes

HNB sued the makers of set-top boxes and providers of services that were designed to receive pay-tv channels without the permission of the channel owners or distributors. On August 18, 2016, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas entered a final judgment and permanent injunction against Zuhai Gotech Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., Gotech International Technology Ltd., and Globalsat International Technology Ltd. operating out of Hong Kong and China. These defendants manufactured or distributed infringing devices and services under the brand names Globalsat, AZAmerica, NAZABox, Capitveworks, and Limesat. The Court found the Defendants liable for 509,259 violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, awarded $101 million in statutory damages, impounded all the infringing devices, and barred the Defendants from manufacturing, importing, selling, and distributing these and similar products in the future.
